Some great plein air-time awaits you

Slide1Ever wonder why a bunch of people around the world spend days schlepping equipment to places just to paint? Ever want to try it yourself but are a little apprehensive about how to go about doing it? Well, here’s a plan for “plein airing” out in public.

Grab a hat and sun screen, then fill a bag (or cart, preferably on wheels) and throw in: your paints, a water jug, something to put the water into, your brushes, paper towels (or a toilet paper roll) a pencil,  an eraser, an easel, some clips or tape, and a chair or stool if you like to sit and paint. A board or a thick piece of cardboard backing will do, or use the back of one of those white corrugated, plastic political/advertising sign boards and you will be all set to strut your stuff. Slide1

So now, all you bag ladies and gentlemen, you look around and see what interests you for an inspiration, remembering that the light and shadows will be changing from time to time. A good idea is to take a photo if the shadows are what drew you into the piece to begin with. A nine square grid (like a tic tac toe board) could also give you the idea where to place your focal point (on one of the lines or where they criss-cross.)

Slide2Number 1 Rule– SAVE YOUR WHITES! Our demo leaders are always telling us to have the whites “dance” in and throughout the work, so this is a good idea. If you can create a values study so you can see in advance where you are going.  Map in the planes, mix colors on the paper (use several of the same value for interest), use repeated shapes, vary the sizes, create depth, use odd numbers, and go for it. Before long,  you too will become an outdoor painter.Slide3

IMG_5806 (2)
Grab your hat and paint it! Send it in for us to see.

There is nothing plain about becoming a plein air painter. You can get so much pleasure by doing it by yourself or with others. So go catch the LIGHT and join in the fun.

Color me in awe of the COLOR WHEEL working!

juneMaxion1In all the years of art school, we have been taught to use the color wheel. There are a few artists in this organization that do it so naturally, I wish I could learn how to do it when I paint. June Maxion is one of those artists who hits this all the time with no effort.  Slide3Slide7Slide10 Slide11

Here are some eye-openers that I am teaching my class in Laguna right now. So next time you have the opportunity to incorporate these concepts, you will succeed.

Not only does the color wheel help, but look below at the high contrast and same value photos and how the mood changes with these concepts. I hope you get some great inspirations and ideas of how to use these within your paintings. Let me know if this is helpful. Thanks, Penni

Even complementary colors muted work wonders.

Hi Penni, another thought provoking blog. Love it! Francine

A little Trinidad came to San Diego (for a visit with Brenda)

IMG_5809[1]Have sketch book, will travel. Brenda certainly filled her sketch book up ever since her teacher said she had to fill it everyday and do it in ink. Our members got to see her many travels and hear the story of how her son picked up a case of  poison ivy which led to her finding out her son had cancer. Good news is he is in remission and she continues to share her artist talent with others.

Francine, again, thanks for the photos. I can see that everyone had a good time on their trip to Trinadad.Slide1 Slide2 Slide3

“Awakening!”

“Awakening”, the wonders of the world and our members await you.  You may know I moved out of town so I miss coming to events. BUT, (a big BUT), I need fodder from my troops in boots out in the field in San Diego (or our members who may also not trek the SD turf!) I need your input and help  as I like to aim for two blogs a week.

So wake up and get busy this year providing us with what curious minds want to know, about you!

drew dog
Drew, drew a pooch!

This new year,  I want your participation. The blog is about us and gossip about our membership. If you enjoy reading it, then maybe you can add to it. Give me some ideas or pass on your beauties so the rest of us know you better. I know how bad we feel when we do not get in the show, but love the piece(s) we entered. This is the place to send it, we want to see what you have been working on. Everyone has a favorite painting or even a photograph that they would love to share with the world, don’t they? Here is the opportunity of your life’s wishes. We wish to ShowOff you!

Little Miss Rosie Rubin May 28, 2014

Besides that, we do not always have chances to meet and greet our members and this blog could become a great gossip column. I am willing to spread the news this way. Jamie Wright wrote a book on painting lighthouses, I photographed and wrote “Why Is The Sky Blue?” and it was in the local paper here in Laguna last week.

Did you take a gorgeous photo or do a sketch for a future painting? Send it here.   I’ll bet others have done something like that too. We all have congrats or mosel tuv’s in our family lives so here you can say it out loud. I have a brand new adopted granddaughter so I will be the first Brag It– here is little Miss Rosie, and some day I will try to capture that face on paper or canvas! How about you? Do you have a photo or something you want to let the world know about your new book, or CD or show coming up? New house? New car? Come on, bring it here and inform our members all about it (and I really could use your help.

SUNSHINES: Know anyone who is ill or needs a sunny remark from us? Let me know.

June M. hope you are up and around painting your masterpieces! Does anyone else have wishes or “sunshines” to announce?

Margrit Spears her work in different styles

margrit spears1Margrit Spears is a member and a volunteer and recently we met at the volunteer appreciation evening. She  sent me several pieces to share with you and answered the questions below so we know how she thinks and paints.

1. My art background is curiosity and I am self-taught.

2. My work is in psychology. I have a Ph.D in Counseling psychology and I am a licensed Marriage and Family Counseler. My work continues in researching the principles of Holographic Psychology.

3. Nature and out of the box things.

4. My thought process is watching how the painting creates itself. No sketching, no trials.
