If you get there early enough, those colorful doors are still closed and you get an eyeful of splashes of delight as you gaze the various art studios and corridors.  You just can’t wait to paint those doorways and planters and that painted floor , (oh my)!

Extra Staffers Needed for October!

The gallery is sparkling clean and the paintings are hung for our 36th International Exhibition, held the entire month of October, which means our gallery will be open EVERY DAY, 10am to 4pm — provided we have volunteers to staff the front desk!  If you have had training, and can help out, PLEASE check the staffing calendar on our Web site (log in as if you were entering a show, but click on the “Staffing Calendar” instead).  There are a number of empty shifts, and if there’s no staffer, then we have to close.  So please, please, PLEASE help us out by working one or two shifts during October.

Quite Often, Life Imatates Art

life-imitates-artPenni,

Wanda Honeycutt sent me the attached photo which I found quite funny and I have named the photo, Life Imitates Art.  She took it while staffing.  It shows member, Camille Rothenberg, looking at my painting in the August show.  She is assuming the exact pose of the person in the painting and is even wearing the same kind of hat.  Just goes to show how often we assume this pose in our daily lives.

Anyway, if you are looking for something for the blog I thought you might like to use this.

Thanks much for all you do with the blog.  I do enjoy reading it.

The “Bredow” of the earth could be this gal’s motto

Lynette:
My background in painting was in oils that I first was introduced to in high school. I then discovered acrylics through a class I took in the late 80’s. I enjoyed it and built my skill and technique that eventually led me and my husband to do a business. I designed and published instructional packets for painting my designs. My husband was my woodworker. He made the surfaces that my designs were painted on.

In 2000 I had my first book published with varying designs for an artist/acrylic painter to do. I also did FullSizeRender (10)travel teaching to the chapter groups of the Society of Tole and Decorative Painters that I also was a member of. In 2004 I earned my CDA status ( Certified Decorative Artists).
I was introduced to watercolor almost 2 years ago by a workshop I took with Ramona Art Guild, which I am a member of. My first instruction came from Chuck McPherson. He opened to door to a whole new experience in painting. I have painted in watercolor and acrylics under the weekly session in Ramona where I live, with Stan Goudey.
FullSizeRender (8)I am inspired by color. The subject that catches my eye usually is led by color and atmosphere. Is it a sunny day with light and deep shadow or is it overcast with softer light a subdued tones of color. It just depends on my attraction to the overall mood that leads me in a painting.FullSizeRender (11)
FullSizeRender (9)I don’t ever attack a painting…I allow it to lead me into a restful place that guides my thoughts about what I am about to create. I find painting to be that place of escape from the craziness of the daily routines.

We had a BlogChallenge of rock walls, this is a great example of how to paint rocks. Good job!

I retired from hairstyling after 40 years in 2005 after my husband passed away. I then got a job in retail at Albertsons 2006. I was in charge of the Floral Dept. for 4 1/2 years and retired from there in 2013. I now am able to do what I love….painting and sharing my creative side.
I am among the many artists that were chosen to display their work for the month of August “Paint the Town”. My Watercolor for this exhibit is “Flamingo Blush”

The subject is Subjects! They do matter.

IMG_2104Of all the paintings that you have created, which subject do you think was the most successful? Looking through art books, the still life always pops out and landscapes do also.Throughout history, artists have chosen those two things to paint. Along with portraits, those are best sellers.  But whenever I go to art shows, I always love to see animals or even off-the-beaten path objects, like old tools or items that one normally wouldn’t think of painting. I remember these like: Vicki P’s old truck, Drew B’s rusty shovel, Pat D’s mailboxes, (and I did an old egg beater once) are some of the iconic pieces I stopped and wondered about. Where did those inspirations come from?P1010733 - Copy

When you are in a slump, what do you do to get trough it? I am sure we have thousands of stories on this subject alone, so send them in. Maybe your story will help someone who is not producing what they would like to at some point. roz guitarHow do you get your inspirations?

A Pair of new Painters met by the Pier in PB

IMG_3973
Katie

Katie, Charlotte, Veronica, Barb, Sue and I had to schlep our goodies, (our paints and stools and easels and sketch books and brushes, etc.) to the beach after finding parking spaces in Pacific Beach. It is a beautiful way to spend a day with friends, especially on the pier on Crystal Pier. People watching is just as much fun as painting there and we certainly saw our share of interesting people and heard so many languages spoken. A guy played his harmonica, people skated by, a gal was carrying her surfboard on her head while her skirt was blowin’ in the wind and babies were running around chasing the birds.

What a way to spend a day! (and thanks Veronica for some of the photos!)

Fly Away this month, and catch up on your painting

IMG_0914 Caterpillars have a lovely texture and they spin a good tale (I mean chrysalis), but who wants to paint one and it wouldn’t stay still enough for you to capture all those little legs on paper. But, they do turn into a wonderful site. I have a neighbor who has milkweed plants on her patio and she gets to watch this happen. Did you know they liquefy inside that little cocoon and then redistribute their cells and spread their wings? They also lose a bunch of legs because as insects they have six sets of jointed legs, so Mommy doesn’t have to buy them too many shoes for the first day of school. They say butterflies are free, so start painting yours.  A dragonfly will do too, or a lady bug, a fly, or any other insects, just get out your paints and fly away! So BUGS count for this month’s blog.

Past President, Mike Shirk Passes

In the past 51 years, SDWS has benefited from the contributions of so many volunteers and this past week we lost a member who ranks at the top of that list.   Recognized for his multi-faceted service to SDWS that included coordinator of the Paintout system, Membership Chair, Director of the International Exhibition, website master, and President, Mike Shirk was awarded the Society’s highest honor, that of Life Member.  Disabled by a rare crippling disease, Mike proved that making accommodations is a part of life and not a sign of limited ability.
