I remember being there many moons ago and am glad they had a chance to capture the spirit there. I did mine in acrylics and I remember a very warm day with the group. If you ever want to attempt plein air painting, come any Weds. and join the fun.
Saturdays can be daunting but not when they are our special paintouts. Diane Kalt decided we needed to challenge ourselves and discover our inner talent and attempt to learn how to do a portrait in watercolors. And we followed.

Your homework assignment before the paintout is to draw or enlarge and trace a portrait that you would like to paint. Bring your photo that is at least 8X10 with your drawing on a quarter or half sheet watercolor paper. By having the drawing done all of us non portrait painters can get to painting right away and try out what Diane has taught us. The following is what Diane suggest and the colors she uses.

I got a BA in art from CSU Sacramento as a young-married transfer student from a Minnesota college, studying with ultra-cool Oliver Jackson. After thawing out that year, I spent the next 20 years moving 13 times with my Air Force husband, some non-career jobs, but mostly repacking, handyman, raising daughters, painting.
I rotate between various mediums: assemblage, watermedia, collage, acrylic and my new best friend: oil sticks. I also design dresses using plastic bags, styrofoam, or other recycled-materials.
I love working from life, especially the figure (the hands say so much), sketching musicians especially. Drawn to conceptual art, subject is important to me, so found objects must bring meaning as well as visual texture to the assemblage piece.
I collect items that relate to subjects I’d like to tackle, so assemblages and dresses can take a long time to evolve, or fall together quickly, depending upon dumb luck in acquiring materials.
The biggest inspiration, though, is fellow artists. The Wednesday plein air group is especially friendly, inspiring and full of talent.

Brian Meyer has gotten a city permit for us to have our paintout at the Lemon Grove Trolley Park next to the “LEMON!” The station has some unique architecture with a tower on the depot. The depot is surrounded by a promenade that includes a plaza, park, and two windmills. Every Saturday there is also a Certified Farmers Market that vendors offer organic produce, handmade crafts, and other items. I think Starbucks is close by!!

We have been very fortunate through the years to have had wonderful books donated to our library. As a result, however, we’ve found that we have many duplicates, and in order to create more shelf space and to give you an opportunity to own some of these books for your own personal library, we are holding a silent auction during the social hour of our May general meeting. The proceeds will be used to buy DVDs for the SDWS library. So come early, and with your cash, so you can take advantage of this great opportunity! The auction will close promptly at 7:00pm and winning bids will be announced after the demonstration. Don’t miss out!
Important Note for the May 10 and future general meetings: The meeting location has changed from Barracks 17 to the McMillin Event Center on Dewey Road just north of the SDWS gallery. The entrance is on the south side of the building that faces the gallery. The address is 2875 Dewey Road.
